God, I hope that was the last ever episode of New Girl

And I mean that in a good way!

New Girl has never been a perfect show, but I’ve still watched every series, some early seasons even multiple times.

Undeniably some episodes and even entire seasons of the show have led the story and formula astray, sometimes irreparably. But the team behind the show would also often recover and start pumping out great stuff again.

So as season 6 of the show wraps, I’m starting to really hope that that was it. I think this week’s season finale felt like the perfect bow for a show that didn’t always know its place, but still pretty consistently felt like a decent, quirky network-TV rom-com for the modern age.

According to Hollywood Reporter, that was the intention of the episode:

Though the possibility of a seventh (and likely final) season of the Fox comedy is still on the table, creator and showrunner Liz Meriwether tells The Hollywood Reporter that her marching orders were to write an episode that could satisfyingly serve as the end of her series.
Meriwether, who is currently filming a pilot for another potential Fox comedy, says that she’d be happy if this is how it all ends — with a parting shot of Nick and Jess kissing in an elevator — though she’s hoping for more. She spoke with THR about the decision-making that went into the pseudo-finale, where she sees New Girl going from here and the show’s first true moment of uncertainty since it premiered in 2011.

The fact that Nick and Jess had already been together for a previous show arc did mean the final scene of the episode lacked some punch, but it still felt really right and satisfying. In many ways the way in which they have been on again off again also means the final scene feels more authentic and realistic.

Other plot points of the ep were somewhat less exciting — Schmidt lost a bit of his own flavour after moving out of the loft, so his and Cece’s baby felt like an obvious move. But there was still something really nice about seeing a show just end with so many tied loose ends. To not leave fans hanging was the right move and, as a fan, I hope the show stops there.
