I tried the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar yesterday and I couldn’t stop touching the screen. Seriously, I touched it like 5 times.

At home I use a 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina display and I’ve literally never had this problem with it. But Apple’s thin OLED Touch Bar makes the new MacBook feel more like an iPad with a keyboard rather than a typical MacBook.

I think the biggest difference is the combination of a bigger trackpad and the new Touch Bar, which is beneath the screen. When you’re using the Touch Bar your hand is naturally closer to the screen, so you almost instinctively try to touch it. One example was when I was using the Touch Bar in Safari then wanted to open Apple Notes. I went for the screen rather than the trackpad, tapping the big touch-friendly Notes icon to no avail. A similar thing happened when going from the Siri button on the Touch Bar to, again, the screen to interact with Siri.

The new trackpad’s size is also something to get used to. I’d love to see Apple Pencil support or something like that.

The Touch Bar is otherwise really interesting and useful. I really liked using it in Final Cut Pro and Apple Notes (it becomes a dedicated formatting bar), as well as iTunes (where it becomes a scrubbing bar for the track you’re currently playing). But I’m not super keen on getting it just yet. Unlike the MacBook 12" the new Pro doesn’t really seem to be that much thinner than the old Pro. And it’s basically just as powerful too (or at least I haven’t felt the need to buy a faster laptop just yet). In a dream tech world the MacBook 12" would be as powerful as my old Pro and I’d just buy it in Rose Gold.
