Netflix adds more mobile data usage options

Netflix found itself in a tiny bit of hot water in March when it admitted to throttling mobile data usage.

By default the app was keeping video streams at a bitrate of 600Kps.

This morning an update has added more granular controls for users, including a lower bitrate for people on a tight data cap and an unlimited bitrate for people living on the edge.

It’s always great to see more options for users, but right from the beginning Netflix’s decision to limit data usage has made total sense anyway. It’s common practice to limit data usage over strict mobile phone connections and apps like YouTube also already limit video quality. But it’s still nice to see more options for people who want to stream 4K video on the go.
