Gadget — I loved the simplicity of the original Fitbit Flex, so I’m glad the company has brought the fitness tracker with a visual refresh. The Fitbit Flex 2 tracks steps, distance traveled, calories burned, as well as your sleep.

On the surface, though, the only data you can see on the device is a 5 dot indicator of your daily goal progress. If your daily goal is 10,000 steps and you’ve walked 8,430 you’ll see 4 out of the 5 dots light up. To see more precise fitness data you need to check the Fitbit app.

New: Fitbit Charge 2 — Australian release date and pricing
Gadget —The new Fitbit Charge 2 is ugly compared to the regular Charge HR, imo.

Other upgrades include Fitbit’s Smart Track feature, which automatically guesses when you’re, say, running or playing sport, a ‘reminder to move’ feature like the Apple Watch, and a ‘swim-proof’ build. My last Flex died when I took it in the pool, so that’s a cool addition, even if it doesn’t track your laps.

Just like the original Flex you can also swap out the band. Fitbit are selling fancy bangles, for example.

And finally, for battery life the Flex 2 lasts 5 days on a single charge.
