Windows 10 might actually look cool again if this leaked design concept goes ahead

MSPowerUser has published concept screenshots of a Windows 10 UI refresh going by the name of Project NEON. According to the full report, which you can read here:

Project NEON will heavily focus on animations, simplicity, and consistency — essentially bringing back Windows 7’s Aero Glass and mixing it up with animations like the ones from the Windows Phone 8/7 era.

Visually the refresh reminds me of the clean, colourful Zune UI from Microsoft’s brief design heyday in the 2000s, with apps featuring integrated window-controls and less OS-specific chrome. Fonts are also bigger and there’s less colour-clash when compared to the current Windows 10 design. For example the image below features just one shade of grey and a similarly simple glassy menu-pane.

But don’t get too excited just yet. So far:

these are just concepts and the “real deal” will likely be a lot different, for better or worse.

Project NEON is expected to ship later this year and won’t be part of the already announced Windows 10 ‘Creators Update’ that’s shipping in April.

Please please please, Microsoft, let this ship as it looks in the images above. It’s almost enough for me to want to switch back to Windows.
